SAMR Model

In today's society, technology has had many benefits within the classroom and amongst students.  Instruction can be enhanced in the classroom with the use of technology.  Technology is a useful tool when used effectively. The SAMR model is easy and the framework is important to help enhance that learning. 

SAMR consists of 4 components to improve the use of computer technology to enhance learning. The components are:




  • SubstitutionComputer technology is used to perform the same task as was done before the use of computers. 
    • An example is work printed from a computer for students to complete. There is no real connection a student can make to the use of technology. They complete the work and submit it.  
  • Augmentation-Computer Technology offers an effective tool to perform common tasks. 
    • An example is students being able to take a Google quiz online instead of the tradition paper/pencil version of quiz taking. They are able to receive feedback from teachers. Teachers can determine student understanding of the material. Students are also more likely to become engaged in material.                                      
  • Modification-This is the first step over the line between enhancing the traditional goings-on of the classroom and transforming the classroom. Common classroom tasks are being accomplished through the use of computer technology.
    •  An example is converting a written assignment into an audio recording. Students will be able to add their personal touch while enhancing their learning on computer functions.
  • Redefinition-Computer technology allows for new tasks that were previously inconceivable.
    •  An example is using different concepts to create a final project. Students will be able to challenge themselves applying and using their skills learned.

Where I fall on the spectrum...

As a paraprofessional, I have witnessed several teachers use technology to enhance their instruction. I have seen younger grades fall into the augmentation category. I have witnessed middle schoolers fall into the modification category. And I have seen 7th & 8th graders develop some amazing projects using technology. It is impressive to witness the growth of technology enhancement and how students can perform with the use of technology. 


Why I fall in this category...

Though, I am not a teacher yet, I have the opportunity to observe and witness the effectiveness of technology as teachers instruct our students on a daily basis. I personally like this model and would eventually like to implement this framework into my own classroom. There is a lot of information on the SAMR model and it is easy to use. Many of my co-teachers use this model at our school and it seems to work well.

  1. Hello Carmen! As a paraprofessional myself I mostly get to experience and see these frameworks through the lessons of the teachers that I work with. During specials my students really like using Khan Academy, especially when it comes to doing math. This would fall under argumentative which is what I see often at my school. Thanks for the information!
