Mapping Out My Digital Space
Welcome to my digital space!
Honestly, I have never thought about what my digital space
until now. I also must admit I have not reflected on my own digital space. When I
reflect on what I use on my phone or laptop, I notice how much I use personal
and professional accounts. Personal accounts include social media accounts,
banking and shopping. More of my professional ones are work emails, canvas and
anything relating to school, including recently joining Blogger. I also noticed how much I spend on the
internet. David White pointed out how a person can be a visitor or can be a
resident. This can all depend on the context the person is in. The resident
section is when a person uses the internet to interact with others and leaves a
social trace. The visitor section is when a person is trying to accomplish
without leaving a social trace. Mapping
out the four quadrants allowed me to sort out and visually see my digital
spaces. This provided a lot of information to myself.
Reflecting on my digital space map, I noticed I spend a lot of
my time on the web for personal shopping, banking, social media and school
purposes. These items are used for professional and personal purposes. Looking
into my professional portion, Gmail, canvas, Blogger and now Twitter, I noticed
I also spend much time on there too. I use my social media to see what my
friends are up to and to keep in touch with them. Although I use these spaces
daily, my current daily schedule can sometimes hinder my usage. Other spaces,
such as Pandora or Pinterest are used on down time for personal reasons.
A part of my digital space map where I find informative is
how I have email accounts I need to keep up with. These accounts are all uses
for professional and personal reasons. I am able to notify and inform my
classmates with the use of outlook. I have my Gmail account for my place of employment
to interact or inform staff as well as interacting/responding with families. I
have my Yahoo account for personal reasons, but my child’s teacher notifies me
as well. I also receive bill updates, school updates for my child and much more.
This digital space map activity was helpful and useful as I
was able to self-reflect on where my time is spent and how I utilize these
items in life. I believe my maps will grow as I continue to network and expand
on my career path. I plan on expanding more digital spaces for professional and
personal reasons.

Thank you Carmen for sharing your digital map! It is very insightful to all the different ways people use the Internet for personal and professional reasons. Honestly, I think this is an up and coming thing in this day and age. When I was a kid, I can only remember the Internet being used for research. Now it is used for everything and many companies are pushing for paperless. I think it is a good change, but it can also take away from authentic social interactions with people and then we can lack the appropriate/acceptable social skills needed in life. I've noticed this in my students and the young adults in my life.
ReplyDeleteHi Carmen,
ReplyDeleteI, similar to you, have never mapped out my digital tool use since this assignment. I found it very interesting how many tools crossed over into personal into professional use. I found that many social media sites and my school tools overlapped in this way.
This was an interesting self reflecting experience.
Happy to hear you enjoyed the activity. Your map, just like your career will evolve over time! How fun to come back and revisit a few years from now....
